12/05 Lumen Eclipse Show, Cambridge

The cartographic world and its physical counterpart are getting closer by the minute, thanks to Google maps and collaborators. sosolimited took this trend a step further, infusing life into the map of Cambridge with the sounds and colors of an Autumn drive through Cambridge.

sosolimited was commissioned by Lumen Eclipse to create a video artwork about Cambridge for its outdoor public video exhibition in Harvard Square. We created 02139 DOWNSAMPLED, named after the zip code of Cambridge, MA.

We plotted and filmed a drive through the city, ending up at the location of the exhibition. Traversing the path on bicycle a few hours later, we created a sound recording of the same route. The footage of the drive was then time-lapsed and mapped onto the map of Cambridge. The oddly shaped 'pixels' are actual city blocks, colored by the video. The car’s position during the trip is always at the center of the screen, indicated by the small yellow square.

The sound composition moves with the map, with samples appearing in the mix as we pass their points of origin.
